If the buzz about SXSW in Austin is any indicator of its popularity, there may be more than 49,000 attendees who are challenged with what they need to reuse, recycle or renew. Yet despite the long lines among the dizzying array of music, film and interactive venues, there are a few notable green highlights at SXSW.
What’s Green Now:
The Green Zone, sponsored by Whole Foods Market, has transformed a parking lot at 7th and Red River St. to replenish attendees’ needs of water, food and energy. With free cell phone charging provided as a courtesy of Sol Design Lab’s Solar Pump, free Wi-Fi and free drinking water, the Green Zone is open through March 17th to SXSW attendees and to the public.
SXSW badge Recycling Program: After the attendees venture home, SXSW Eco has partnered with Austin Bergstrom International Airport to implement a new badge-pocket recycling program. Each ABIA security checkpoint will have large white boxes labeled “Recycle Your SXSW Badge Here.”
What’s Newly Green: Amiando, one of the leading ticketing tools worldwide, launched a green ticketing and event platform at SXSW Interactive. Not only is amiando’s online registration system completely paperless, amiando now allows delegates to buy CO2 certificates in order to compensate for their carbon dioxide emissions impact that is caused by their travel to and from the event. “Event production and attendee travelling make events a relevant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. As the tool of choice for thousands of event organizers we see it as our responsibility to act environmentally thoughtful. Therefore we are very happy and proud to help both event organizers and delegates to reduce an event’s carbon footprint”, says Felix Haas, CEO of amiando.
What Will Be Green: SXSW Eco: For those SXSW Interactive attendees who want more, SXSW Eco will be held at the AT&T Conference Center in Austin, Texas from October 3rd through October 5th. The conference will will feature sessions from experts in the public, private and academic sectors committed to finding solutions for a sustainable world.
What Should Be Green: Business cards. With all of the Apps announced at what’s been dubbed as the Superbowl of Social Media, it is surprising that business cards are still required for SXSW introductions. So for all those non-Silicon Valley startups out there: SXSW is in dire need of a simple, eco-friendly, high-tech way to exchange professional contact info within the blink of an eye.
